Though Kamala Harris became the Democratic candidate when Joe Biden withdrew from the election, the nine voters didn\u2019t seem too happy with Harris or Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Each month, The Deciders series checks in with one of the groups expected to play a big role in electing the next president of the United States. The initiative is a partnership between Sago, Engagious, NBC News and Syracuse University&rsquo;s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LTq2qyl4g24[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Which Candidate Is a Bigger Agent of Change?<\/h3>\n<p>The swing state Hispanic voters were asked whether they thought Harris or Trump would be a bigger agent of change if elected. None of the voters thought Harris would make the most significant changes if she became president.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYes, she has an ability to change, but I don\u2019t think that she would have the support in order to do the changes. I think that there would be a lot of hold up for any changes that she may want to implement. So, I think Trump won\u2019t have a hold up. I think he would have the opportunity and the ability, with the people in place to make the changes, good or bad.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m hoping that he\u2019ll bring about some good change, I\u2019m hoping that he\u2019ll help inflation go down.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">Negative Views of Trump\u2019s Changes<\/h3>\n<p>Several of the swing state Hispanic voters believe the changes that Trump would implement in office would be negative. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat man is bringing a lot of change. It\u2019s going to be corrupt and it\u2019s going to be ugly. I want to see it to believe it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would say dismantling every meaningful aspect of our Democratic principles is a pretty big change.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think he likes to flirt on the edge of what\u2019s legal and law-abiding and that he\u2019ll push a lot of issues, immigration policy, domestic policy, foreign policy, to the point where it has to keep being litigated by the Supreme Court or the states or Congress. So, it\u2019s just going to cause more chaos and it\u2019ll be more, in my opinion, negative change.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">Perceptions of Harris During the Biden Administration<\/h3>\n<p>The nine Hispanic voters don\u2019t place blame on Vice President Harris for any of the failures of Biden\u2019s presidency. However, they also don\u2019t give her credit for any of the administration\u2019s achievements. Here\u2019s what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t active enough to be blamed for anything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn the years, I\u2019ve lived in this country, I don\u2019t remember seeing any vice president do anything or get a credit for anything. The president is the one to decide whatever going to be done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cKnowing Biden and his team, he had a lot of the power to sort of pick and choose their policies and strategies. It didn\u2019t seem like, from what I\u2019ve read, that she was a big player in pushing things one way or another.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb el_class=\u00a0\u00bbgreenpostquote\u00a0\u00bb]<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137299345 BCX0\">\u201cIn the years <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137299345 BCX0\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137299345 BCX0\"> lived in this country, I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137299345 BCX0\">don\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137299345 BCX0\"> remember seeing any vice president do anything or get a credit for anything. The president is the one to decide whatever&rsquo;s going to be done.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h5>How Voters Describe Harris<\/h5>\n<p>Six of the swing state Hispanic voters say they\u2019re following the election very closely. However, only one of the nine participants in the focus groups saw Harris\u2019s speech during the Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>The voters were asked to name the first thing that comes to mind when they think of Harris. Their responses included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUnknown\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPresidential candidate\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBipolar lady\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGenocidal candidate\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGhost\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCorrupt\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHiding\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProsecutor\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h5>How Voters Describe Trump<\/h5>\n<p>These nine Hispanic voters were also asked to choose one word to describe Trump. Here\u2019s what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAngry\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cArrogant\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNarcissist\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCorrupt\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLoud\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRacist\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProblem\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">Which Candidate Would Voters Choose?<\/h3>\n<p>Based on their descriptions of Harris and Trump, these swing state Hispanic voters don\u2019t approve of either candidate. If a two-candidate election took place on the day after they were interviewed, here\u2019s how the nine of them would vote:<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump: 5<br \/>\nKamala Harris: 3<br \/>\nNot Voting: 1<\/p>\n<p>In a multi-candidate race, their votes would be divided like this:<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump: 4<br \/>\nKamala Harris: 3<br \/>\nCornel West: 1<br \/>\nClaudia De la Cruz: 1<br \/>\nJill Stein: 0<br \/>\nChase Oliver: 0<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">Which Previous Democratic Candidate Is Harris Like?<\/h3>\n<p>The Hispanic voters were asked which of the last three Democratic nominees for president \u2013 Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden \u2013 they thought Harris was most similar to. Five said Biden, while three chose Clinton. Only one said Obama.<\/p>\n<p>Comments from those who said Harris is most like Biden included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI feel like Biden is the epitome of milquetoast Democratic Center rightness and I just don\u2019t see Kamala Harris straying too far from that. It\u2019s not so much about Biden and Harris being indistinguishable from each other, just that they are both kind of very run-of-the-mill Democratic policy types.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI almost can\u2019t separate her from Biden, I mean, in terms of policy. She just goes along, wishy-washy, doesn\u2019t take a stand or take takes a stand and then changes her stance. So, she\u2019s no Hilary.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t really know where she stands. I feel like she\u2019s just a replica, the shadow of Biden.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think they have the same personality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">A Top Concern for Voters<\/h3>\n<p>For these voters, the country\u2019s economy is a top concern. Five of them said the U.S. economy is in \u201clousy shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what these voters had to say about their economic worries:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGoodness, where do you start? It\u2019s everything from unemployment to jobs getting sent overseas, trade policies that we have.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI have children and grandchildren and now I\u2019m helping them with their groceries. Because even though their salary is the same, everything\u2019s increased by 20 and 30 percent. Now, I can help them because I\u2019m a cheapskate and I saved my pennies and invested them over time, so it\u2019s not hurting me the way it hurts them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNow people are having multiple jobs, where in good years, you would have one job to pay for the necessities or the cost of living.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAll this money going out to other countries, like Ukraine, and going to wars when we got people here that don\u2019t eat, don\u2019t sleep right, don\u2019t have a shirt on their back. That\u2019s the stuff that\u2019s pissing me off. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSeems like when the Democrats are in office the economy goes down, Republicans, economy goes up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThinking more about my children and grandchildren, I\u2019d like to have them have the same opportunity that I had, of the American dream, of owning a home. I don\u2019t see them being able to achieve that right now. They\u2019re just living from hand to mouth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think Trump has more of a head for economics, as a businessman and again with budgeting.
