{"id":9004111222019642,"date":"2023-06-12T09:46:44","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T13:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3c98cd88ae.nxcli.io\/?p=9004111222019642"},"modified":"2023-06-12T10:09:41","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T14:09:41","slug":"the-persuadables-project-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sago.com\/fr\/resources\/insights\/the-persuadables-project-may-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"The Persuadables Project: May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Persuadables Project is an ongoing collaboration between Sago, Engagious, and the Washington Post that conducts bi-monthly<a href=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/en\/solutions\/platforms\/qualmeeting\/\"> online focus groups<\/a> with Americans who live in key states. Respondents are all Republicans or Republican-voting Independents.<\/p>\n<h2>Context for This Month\u2019s Panel<\/h2>\n<p>Our group this month comprised 15 persuadable voters from four key states: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Arizona. In May 2023, with a recession still possibly on the table, nearly everyone on our panel expressed strong concerns about the state of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>But with unemployment near an all-time low of 3.4 percent, stocks near their high for the year, and an inflation rate that has receded to around 5 percent from much higher levels, what would explain the disconnect between these numbers and how these constituents actually feel?<\/p>\n<h2>On the State of the Economy<\/h2>\n<p>When asked to rate the current state of the U.S. economy, here\u2019s how our swing voters weighed in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eight out of the 15 believe the economy is in poor condition.<\/li>\n<li>Six of the 15 believe it\u2019s in fair condition.<\/li>\n<li>Only one respondent thinks it\u2019s in good shape.<\/li>\n<li>No one believes the current economy is in excellent condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s what several of the respondents had to say on the matter:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think we have a lot of garbage loans. I think we\u2019re going to see another repeat of 2008. We\u2019ve already had a couple of bank failures and there\u2019s a lot of garbage out there. It\u2019s sad. It\u2019s predatory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPrices have gone up a lot. Energy costs in Wisconsin\u2014we just went up, I think, 20 percent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere are homeless camps all along downtown Phoenix. And that cannot be good. I\u2019ve never seen that before.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>On Abortion<\/h2>\n<p>Changing topics to another hot ongoing debate in the United States: the growing movement against the right to abort.<\/p>\n<p>None of the 15 respondents are in favor of an abortion law\u2014like the one Governor DeSantis signed in Florida\u2014that would ban the procedure after the first six weeks, and with limited exceptions up to 15 weeks (e.g. if there is evidence of a crime).<\/p>\n<p>One respondent\u2019s explanation of her disapproval: <em>\u201cSometimes women don\u2019t even know they\u2019re pregnant during the first six weeks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>On Next Year\u2019s Election<\/h2>\n<p>When asked, \u201cWho among you wishes neither Trump nor Biden was running in 2024 and that both parties would seek a different nominee?\u201d every participant in the group raised their finger.<\/p>\n<p>Some of their thoughts included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think we need more choices from both parties. Fresh faces. Fresh ideas. Youthfulness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOne just made this country a mess, and the other one can\u2019t get his act together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey should both retire. And what I\u2019d like to see is a couple of candidates with no gray hair.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When asked, \u201cHow do you feel about the fact that the two likely options next year will be Trump and Biden?\u201d these are the sentiments that were expressed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ashamed<\/strong> that in this country, that is the best that we can do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Worried<\/strong> that there\u2019s not anybody else that has tried to step up; and I\u2019m worried about what the future will hold with either of these two potentially in office.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disappointed and frustrated<\/strong> were two more words submitted by the group.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone agreed they felt <strong>worried and concerned.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So then, what personal characteristics do these voters want to see in their next president?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Honesty<\/strong>: Stick with what you say.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Serious<\/strong>: Their words are backed up with action. No jargon. No talking points.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integrity<\/strong>: Someone we can trust and believe in.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency<\/strong>: Someone who is a little more forthcoming.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong-willed<\/strong>: In their conviction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grounded, resourceful, transformative, accountability<\/strong>: A true servant leader.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Humility<\/strong>: Not a narcissist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If there were a hypothetical election tomorrow between Trump and Biden, the swing voters would vote in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nine would take Biden.<\/li>\n<li>Three would take Trump.<\/li>\n<li>One would take some third-party candidate.<\/li>\n<li>Two would not vote at all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engagious.com\/persuadablepartisansproject\/\">Watch the full video<\/a> to see what choice words our respondents had to describe how they would feel if either candidate were to serve as our next president.
