The conversations with these voters focused on their changing perceptions of Trump. They\u2019re particularly concerned about how the president\u2019s tariffs affect the economy. The voters also wonder if Congress will act to limit Trump\u2019s power and about Elon Musk\u2019s role in the administration.<\/p>\n<p>Each month, the Swing Voter Project holds focus groups with voters from key battleground states. Those who take part voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2024. The project is a collaboration between Sago, <a href=\"https:\/\/engagious.com\/\">Engagious<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/\">Axios.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/GWLgK0fKR_I[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>How Michigan Swing Voters Feel About Trump<\/h3>\n<p>During the Swing Voter Project focus groups in February, 11 out of 11 Arizona voters said they approved of Trump\u2019s actions since he took office. In the March focus groups \u2014 just four weeks later \u2014 11 out of 13 Michigan swing voters disapproved of what the president has been doing. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s so erratic and it&#8217;s getting to the point where I\u2019m almost scared to watch the news. I mean, it\u2019s a little bit frightening. Each day is something new, so you get a little anxious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe campaigned on a lot of things. He\u2019s done a few, but I feel like the cost of living is kind of still scary for people, especially with Canada threatening electricity and higher rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like a lot of his actions have just been disruptive and creating chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Voter Expectations vs. What\u2019s Happening<\/h3>\n<p>As the voters talked about being disappointed by Trump, they seemed surprised by what the president has done so far. They were then asked how they could be surprised by what\u2019s happening after observing Trump\u2019s first term as president. Here\u2019s some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel like he was this aggressive last time, so I don\u2019t think anyone would\u2019ve voted for him if they expected to see what we\u2019re seeing now. I think he just didn\u2019t do a whole lot last time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what he campaigned with and compared to what he\u2019s doing is pretty opposite. So, the things that he said he would do to better the economy and make changes that would better our country, it\u2019s not happening.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb el_class=\u00bbgreenpostquote\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]<span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\">\u201cI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\">didn\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\"> see this coming. I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\">didn\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\"> think he was going to take these points of views that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\">he\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightClickedRefresh SCXW220064671 BCX8\"> taking and that was the surprise for me, I guess.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>Top Concern: The Economy<\/h3>\n<p>For all 13 Michigan swing voters, the US economy is a major concern. None of them believe President Trump has made fighting inflation a top priority in his first 50 days. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a big campaign promise, so it feels like maybe that\u2019s being overlooked in favor of other things that maybe aren\u2019t as important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s upsetting. I thought that his first 100 days, like he talked about, would be so much better than they are. It is a little frightening too, not knowing if you\u2019ll have a job. Not knowing if you can afford to pay your bills, if you can save money, if your money in the stock market tanks in a day or two. You just feel uncertain about, actually, your future. We\u2019ve got four years of this. It\u2019s not even 90 days and here we are talking like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fearful. It\u2019s very unsettling. It\u2019s almost like PTSD from other recessions. It\u2019s almost to the point where I feel like are we headed towards something even worse, because of how quickly things have been accelerating.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>How Voters Feel About Trump\u2019s Tariffs<\/h3>\n<p>Many of the Michigan swing voters have issues with Trump\u2019s tariffs. Here are a few of their comments:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand the need to piss every other country off, like Canada. We love Canada, don\u2019t we? My whole life, there\u2019s never been a problem with Canada and all of a sudden, now, we\u2019re trying to create issues with Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do home remodeling, so I\u2019m concerned about the price of wood going up because of the tariffs and just home improvement products, because it\u2019ll probably make people less likely to pursue projects that I\u2019ve had estimates out there for.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=\u00bb2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]\u201cI understand that he\u2019s raising prices for other countries. I do think that they will retaliate as far as exports, imports. And I think that, overall, it will make everyday cost of everything go up directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work in automotive and our concerns are the cars will be overpriced \u2026 There won\u2019t be anybody buying cars. We won\u2019t be able to have the materials to build the cars and there\u2019ll be layoffs. My layoff just started Monday for six weeks, so it\u2019s already affecting us.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner el_class=\u00bbmainpostimgboximg\u00bb width=\u00bb1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=\u00bb9004111222027677&#8243; img_size=\u00bbfull\u00bb alignment=\u00bbcenter\u00bb style=\u00bbvc_box_rounded\u00bb css=\u00bb\u00bb label=\u00bb\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>How Voters View Trump\u2019s Messaging About the Economy<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to the economy, these Michigan swing voters would like to see more reassurance from President Trump. They don\u2019t like what he\u2019s said about the state of the economy. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do agree with the tariffs. I don\u2019t necessarily think it\u2019s a bad idea, but I don\u2019t like somebody telling me things are going to get bad or worse before they get better. When do they get better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a good thing to hear your president saying that this is what\u2019s coming and he doesn\u2019t even know what\u2019s ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very vague and he\u2019s not given any explanation of what the transition actually is going to entail.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Do Voters Regret Electing Trump?<\/h3>\n<p>The 10 Michigan swing voters who said they were disappointed with Trump were asked if they would change their votes if they could. However, in hindsight, only one would vote for Kamala Harris instead. The other nine would still vote for Trump. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that America cannot handle a minority female as a president. I feel like that is one of the reasons that I leaned closer to Trump \u2026 Trump, we\u2019ve gone through four years with him before, and it\u2019s just kind of just grin and bear it for another four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to hope that he can fulfill his promises and maybe there is some method to the madness. But, with Harris, you don\u2019t know where we would be with her right now either.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=\u00bb.vc_custom_1715340378415{margin-top: 40px !important;}\u00bb conditional_render=\u00bb%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D\u00bb][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb el_class=\u00bbgraypostquote\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]\u201cIt just seemed like she was not really ready to be in the seat of leadership.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=\u00bb\u00bb css_params=\u00bb\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>Concerns About Congress<\/h3>\n<p>11 of the 13 Michigan swing voters are worried Congress will not keep Trump\u2019s actions in check. They were asked to talk about their specific concerns regarding Congress and the US system of checks and balances. Some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a breakdown of democracy, which is what the United States has always been about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA continuation of what\u2019s been already happening. So, more loss of jobs, an increase of inflation, consumer prices, cutting off relationships \u2014 necessary relationships with bordering countries \u2014 just an escalation of what\u2019s been going on right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat this will eventually turn into a dictatorship. That if the people that we elected to be his checks and balances don\u2019t check and balance him, then what are they there for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, if Congress doesn\u2019t check him, he\u2019ll just continue to go his own way and just drag us down with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Views of Elon Musk<\/h3>\n<p>During February\u2019s focus groups, Arizona voters seemed happy with Elon Musk\u2019s role in Trump\u2019s administration. Eight out of 11 participants in last month\u2019s focus groups approved of Musk\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>The Michigan swing voters see Musk in a less positive light. 11 of the 13 expressed disapproval when asked about Musk. Their explanations included comments such as these:<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9004111222027683 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/trumpElon_Capture-300x164.png\"  alt=\"sago\"  width=\"458\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/trumpElon_Capture-400x219.png 400w, https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/trumpElon_Capture-367x201.png 367w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wasn\u2019t elected to do anything. I don\u2019t understand his position. It\u2019s a made-up position that they made. Department of whatever. And he\u2019s been going through<\/p>\n<p>with the sledgehammer, just actually dismantling everything, with the approval of Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just thinks he\u2019s got all this power. I think he laid too many people off too quickly here. I think it\u2019s unfortunate that he\u2019s been given this much power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree that there is a lot of waste that needs to be taken care of within the government, but I just don\u2019t see how Elon Musk is in a level of knowledge to be able to do anything about it. I just don\u2019t see how he could be put in a position to go through all these things that he has no business doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago, 10 years ago, nobody even knew this guy existed \u2026 Who is this guy?
