Each month, The Deciders series checks in with one of those groups to find out what they think about the candidates. This initiative is a partnership between Sago, Engagious, NBC News and Syracuse University&#8217;s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>In July, <strong>just two days after President Joe Biden withdrew as a presidential candidate<\/strong>, The Deciders spoke to 14 voters who supported Nikki Haley during the primaries.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Voting in 2020 and 2024<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the 14 participants voted in 2020 and who they plan to support this year:<\/p>\n<p>2020 (actual votes)<\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden: 3<br \/>\nDonald Trump: 8<br \/>\nJo Jorgenson: 3<\/p>\n<p>2024 (expected votes)<\/p>\n<p>Kamala Harris: 3<br \/>\nDonald Trump: 5<br \/>\nChase Oliver: 3<br \/>\nRobert Kennedy Jr.: 2<br \/>\nNot Voting: 1<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">What The Voters Think of Kamala Harris<\/h3>\n<p>When these 14 voters were asked what word comes to mind when they think of Harris, here\u2019s some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would say a feminist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSometimes catty.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGiggly\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCoattails\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLiberal\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe\u2019s capable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInteresting\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCondescending\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFlaky or word salad.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRadical\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI want to say intelligent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLoyal\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJust feels like she\u2019s always in the background.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">What the Voters Like About Harris<\/h3>\n<p>When the 14 Haley voters were asked what they like about Harris, their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStrong and wise.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI just like that she\u2019s a woman. I think it\u2019s time to have a woman in the forefront.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe\u2019s not Joe Biden.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI like that she\u2019s really pioneering a trail for others to follow in her footsteps.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI like her background. I like where she\u2019s coming from, like past jobs.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgbox&#8221; conditional_render=&#8221;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8221;][vc_column conditional_render=&#8221;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8221;][vc_row_inner equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221; el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgboxinner&#8221;][vc_column_inner el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgboximg&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9004111222025319&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">What the Voters Dislike About Harris<\/h3>\n<p>Ten of the 14 participants see Harris\u2019s candidacy as a continuation of Biden\u2019s failed policies. When asked what they specifically dislike about Harris, here\u2019s some of what these voters said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think she\u2019s out of her league.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHow she was in charge of the Southern border, that was one of the very few things that people knew about her during Biden\u2019s presidential run.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe simplistic explanations given when asked about Ukraine and other events.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t have a good understanding of her policy views.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOne of the things that I dislike about her is that we don\u2019t know enough. She\u2019s been Vice President for almost four years and we still have no idea what her platform is or what she stands for.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI dislike that when she is asked tough questions, even domestically, but specifically on the international stage, when she gets flustered, she giggles. I think that is a telling sign to our enemies that they have just made her uncomfortable. I don\u2019t think that you should have a tell like that when you are running for president or are the current seated Vice President of the United States.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">Should Biden Resign from Office?<\/h3>\n<p>After Biden withdrew from the 2024 election, House Speaker Mike Johnson called for the president to resign from office. Johnson said that if Biden is not fit to run for president, he\u2019s not fit to serve as president. When the 14 Haley supporters were asked if they agreed with Johnson, all of them said no.<\/p>\n<p>Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf he were just a couple of months into his term, I think that would be another thing \u2026 He\u2019s got five months left. It might cause instability in the country, as well as the rest of the world, to have a shift to Kamala or whomever and then another shift come election time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf he steps down, that means Kamala steps in and she\u2019s way more radical than anybody else.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think part of it has to do with the length that\u2019s left on his presidential term. It\u2019s about six, seven months and I think he\u2019s got the mental faculties to continue that. Plus, I think there\u2019s a system of checks and balances and guardrails in place to make sure that he\u2019s not making absent-minded decisions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">Were the Primary Votes for Biden Invalidated?<\/h3>\n<p>House Speaker Johnson also said that when Biden stepped down, he invalidated 14 million votes \u2013 all the votes cast for him during the primaries. However, none of the voters who participated in this The Deciders session supported that view.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I\u2019m not sure why [Johnson] is saying that, and I just don\u2019t know where he\u2019s going with that or what the point of it is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think it was kind of a fake primary anyway&#8230; Even before the primary, people didn\u2019t want Joe Biden. I think it was like 65% of Democrats didn\u2019t even want Joe Biden to run. So, it doesn\u2019t really make sense. They\u2019re not invalidating because they didn\u2019t want him in the first place.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe way I view it is, the votes that were cast for Biden were cast for the Biden-Harris ticket. So, if Biden isn\u2019t on the ticket, I believe it\u2019s still a vote for Harris regardless, because he already identified her as his running mate.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;greenpostquote&#8221;]\u201cThe way I view it is, the votes that were cast for Biden were cast for the Biden-Harris ticket. So, if Biden isn\u2019t on the ticket, I believe it\u2019s still a vote for Harris regardless because he already identified her as his running mate.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor7\">Did Biden Deserve Praise for Stepping Down?<\/h3>\n<p>Democrats praised Biden for his decision to leave the 2024 election. But only five of the 14 Haley voters thought he deserved those accolades. The comments from the group included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe would have never stepped down from running for the presidency unless they hadn\u2019t cut all the money off \u2026 That\u2019s the only reason, because he had no campaign money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think he did it because it was the right thing to do. He did it because he had to.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo praise, because I did feel like he was getting a little old and he needed to step down, relax and live his life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor8\">Is Trump Too Old to Run for Office?<\/h3>\n<p>During the focus groups, the voters were asked if, considering Biden\u2019s withdrawal as a candidate, the Democratic Party should turn the tables on the Republican Party and insist that Trump is too old to run for office. Seven of the 14 Haley voters thought that sounded persuasive. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBecause they\u2019re both too old in the first place and we do need a new generation of political leaders.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI look back and the world\u2019s different than 10 years ago \u2026 and just the topics and all the issues are so much different and they have to be handled so much differently.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The other seven didn\u2019t think focusing on Trump\u2019s age was a solid strategy. They said things like this:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt would be hypocritical for the Democrats to attack Trump on age.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf it was not an issue for Biden to be 81 up until Sunday, it is not an issue for Trump to be 78. Let\u2019s not forget what, at 81, Keith Richards is able to do. He performs every night and he\u2019s dancing and singing and remembering lyrics, so age is not really the determining factor. It is everything else that comes together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor9\">Views of Running Mates<\/h3>\n<p>Before the Republican Convention, only five of the 14 Haley voters had heard of J.D. Vance, Trump\u2019s pick for vice president. Concerns about Vance&#8217;s youth\u2014he just celebrated his 40th birthday on Aug. 2\u2014and his limited political experience was raised by nine of these voters. Additionally, Vance&#8217;s isolationist stance is a cause for concern for 13 of the focus group participants.<\/p>\n<p>Most respondents said that Harris\u2019s choice of running mate would not affect their views of the vice president\u2019s candidacy. However, one participant did say she would love to see Harris choose a certain former candidate for her running mate. \u201cIf she picked Nikki Haley, then I would vote.
