As the countdown to the November election continues, The Deciders series is checking in with these groups. Read on as participants share their thoughts on the presidential race and the issues that may affect their votes. This initiative is a partnership between Sago, Engagious, NBC News and Syracuse University&#8217;s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, the Deciders hosted focus groups with 12 Hispanic Americans living in Arizona. The conversations included their views of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, as well as abortion, immigration, and the border wall.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Awareness of the Presidential Campaign<\/h3>\n<p>Arizona is expected to be a pivotal state in the 2024 election. The voters who took part in The Deciders are among those likely to play a significant role in deciding the race. But despite this status, they haven&#8217;t given much attention to either Biden or Trump&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Half of the Arizona voters aren\u2019t following the candidates very closely. Only five of them know about Biden\u2019s plans for a second term. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProtect reproductive rights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOverturn the decision about Roe v. Wade.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Only two could name something Trump has said he\u2019ll do in a second term. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStop the war in Ukraine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLower taxes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">How the Voters See Biden and Trump<\/h3>\n<p>The Arizona voters were asked to describe the two leading presidential candidates in a word or phrase. Here\u2019s some of what they said about Biden:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUseless\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cToo old\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cIncompetent\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cSenile\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cAncient\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cUnderwhelming\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cCurrent president\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cWeak\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what they said about Trump:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInappropriate\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cCon artist\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cAggressive\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cControversial\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cFormer president\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cRude\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cPoor leadership\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cRidiculous\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">Which Candidate Would Get Their Votes<\/h3>\n<p>These 12 Arizona voters are unhappy with both Biden and Trump. Their comments made it clear that they don\u2019t feel a connection with either candidate.<\/p>\n<p>In a two-way race, five of the Arizona voters would vote for Biden. Three would choose Trump, and four of the Arizona voters wouldn\u2019t vote at all.<\/p>\n<p>In a five-way race, here\u2019s how they would vote:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joe Biden:<\/strong> 2<br \/>\n<strong>Donald Trump:<\/strong> 1<br \/>\n<strong>Robert F. Kennedy Jr.:<\/strong> 5<br \/>\n<strong>Jill Stein:<\/strong> 2<br \/>\n<strong>Cornel West:<\/strong> 0<br \/>\n<strong>Would Not Vote:<\/strong> 2<\/p>\n<p>The voters who expressed support for Kennedy said things like:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI recently watched an interview with him and he seemed very, very knowledgeable on our U.S. History, from the \u201960s up until now \u2026 He also seems to toe the line really well between not being too conservative and not being too Democratic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI picked him because I know he would be good for the economy, because I know he\u2019s involved in stocks and then crypto.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;greenpostquote&#8221;]\u201cI recently watched an interview with [RFK Jr.] and he seemed very, very knowledgeable on our U.S. History, from the \u201960s up until now \u2026 He also seems to toe the line really well between not being too conservative and not being too Democratic.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">The Issue of Abortion<\/h3>\n<p>Abortion is expected to be an issue that has a big effect on how people vote in 2024. However, most of these Arizona voters aren\u2019t following the fight for abortion rights that closely.<\/p>\n<p>During The Deciders conversations, nine of them weren\u2019t certain what the current abortion laws were in their state of Arizona. Still, eight of the respondents say they would vote for a state constitutional amendment regarding abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Six of the focus group participants said Trump was at least partially responsible for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. However, most Arizona voters weren\u2019t quite sure how the Supreme Court changed during Trump\u2019s presidency. Only one of them knew for sure that three justices were appointed while Trump was in office.<\/p>\n<p>The focus group participants were asked to imagine a plea from Biden, with abortion rights as the main focus, not to vote for Kennedy because that would be like giving their vote to Trump. Responses to that scenario included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think that he\u2019s assuming my stance on abortion is that vital. He\u2019s assuming most Americans stance on abortion is that vital. There\u2019s plenty of other issues and large issues that we have that that affect every American, women or men, that decide who we vote for.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think it\u2019s a compelling one. I think if I was faced with that, I think it might sway my vote.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt makes sense, like if that\u2019s the situation, then that would sway my vote.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">Thoughts on Immigration<\/h3>\n<p>When asked about the issue of immigration, six of the Hispanic American voters in Arizona expressed concerns about the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p>Nine of the 12 respondents believe that Trump would do a better job than Biden when it comes to handling the border. Here are some of their comments:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s proven that he\u2019s done it in the past, like the wall.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith Trump, there\u2019s the assumption that he\u2019s not welcoming, he does not like migrants. So, people, just by him being elected, [will say], well, we\u2019re not going to go to the States because we\u2019re not welcome there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">Trump\u2019s Border Wall<\/h3>\n<p>If Trump is elected in November, the Arizona voters don\u2019t want him to finish the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Here\u2019s some of what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI just don\u2019t think it\u2019s effective \u2026 A lot of people that come in usually fly and overstay their visas, so it just doesn\u2019t make sense to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a waste. There\u2019s the energy and the resources need to be put into an actual plan, not just a materialistic show.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s just a huge money pit \u2026 it\u2019s not going to solve everything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For more on the thoughts of critical demographic groups during the 2024 presidential election, don\u2019t miss any installments of The Deciders.
