Most of these Wisconsin swing voters expressed support for President Donald Trump. However, they do have concerns about some of his behavior and recent comments.<\/p>\n<p>The Swing Voter Project is a collaboration between Sago, <a href=\"https:\/\/engagious.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engagious<\/a> and Axios. Each month\u2019s focus groups feature voters from one of seven key battleground states. The respondents voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"5\/20\/25: Most Wisconsin Biden-to-Trump Voters Continue to Support Trump, With Reservations\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kyb09ARbByI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Wisconsin Swing Voters Support Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Nine of 12 Wisconsin swing voters interviewed in May 2025 approve of the president\u2019s actions in the first four months of his second term. In the group, 10 voters identify as independents, while two are Republicans. If they had a chance to vote again in the 2024 election, not even one of them would choose Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p>What these voters had to say about supporting Trump included comments like these:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s doing basically what he ran on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s trying to be more efficient with government spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say immigration. I really like what he\u2019s trying to do with Israel and Gaza and also Ukraine and Russia, and I like some of the things in his \u2018big beautiful bill\u2019. Not everything.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; el_class=&#8220;greenpostquote&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;]<span class=\"TextRun SCXW177883586 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW177883586 BCX8\">\u201cI approve that he is putting America first and finally addressing that we have been taken advantage of and he\u2019s tired of it.\u201d<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3>Why Some Voters Disapprove of Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Three of the 12 Wisconsin swing voters expressed disapproval of Trump. One of them said that Trump\u2019s number one campaign promise was to fix the economy. They feel like fixing the economy has not been a priority for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about why they don\u2019t approve of Trump, the other two had these answers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomy and then I disapprove of the cuts on the programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess it\u2019s mostly the speed that it\u2019s happening. Not so much the topics, but just trying to push everything through so fast. Like, I\u2019m OK with the tariffs, but just hitting it so hard. I\u2019m a small business owner, so it\u2019s creating a lot of anxiety with people\u2019s spending right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Questions Voters Would Ask Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Though three-quarters of the Wisconsin swing voters expressed support for Trump, they still have some questions. If given the opportunity, what they would ask the president included these questions:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the policies you\u2019re trying to get through, but why do you have to be such an egotistical idiot in public? Can\u2019t you just tone it down a little?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy can\u2019t we just be more civil, normal, when we talk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you have to put somebody else down and talk about them? \u2026 I know you\u2019re confident, but it almost sounds like anxiety trying to win people over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing as he views himself as a dealmaker, as a peacemaker, I want to ask him what\u2019s his plan for Gaza and how does he plan to resolve that issue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow far are you planning to go with deportation and how it affects children in this country that have been born in the US to illegal immigrants or non-citizens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say, Mr. Trump, I get the tariffs, but why are we attacking people like Canada and others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would ask him, why is he so against the veterans?\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8220;.vc_custom_1715340378415{margin-top: 40px !important;}&#8220; conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; el_class=&#8220;graypostquote&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;]\u201cWhat is your outlook for future America with all the program cuts, especially for education?\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3>Thoughts on the Economy and Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/h3>\n<p>Eleven of the 12 Wisconsin swing voters believe Joe Biden is more responsible for the current state of the US economy than Trump. Eight of the 12 also approve of Trump\u2019s actions when it comes to tariffs. Ten of them believe Trump has imposed tariffs to strengthen his hand when negotiating.<\/p>\n<p>Nine of the 12 believe the tariffs will be painful in the short term but will pay off in the long terms Their thoughts on tariffs included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s trying to even the playing field and make it more fair for America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s been a long time coming. We\u2019ve been taken advantage of and other countries are charging us more. We\u2019re leaving money on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just went so hard and so fast with Canada. They\u2019re an ally. Yes. Bring them to the table, do tariffs, but give them a minute.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgbox&#8220; conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_column conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_row_inner equal_height=&#8220;yes&#8220; content_placement=&#8220;middle&#8220; el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboxinner&#8220;][vc_column_inner el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboximg&#8220;][vc_single_image image=&#8220;9004111222031058&#8243; img_size=&#8220;full&#8220; alignment=&#8220;center&#8220; style=&#8220;vc_box_rounded&#8220; css=&#8220;&#8220; label=&#8220;&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; css_params=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3>Reactions to a Recent Comment from Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Though the Wisconsin swing voters seem willing to endure short-term economic sacrifices, they did not enjoy hearing Trump\u2019s recent comment about making do with less. The president said that children would have to get used to having two dolls instead of 30.<\/p>\n<p>The voters\u2019 responses to this comment were:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt reminds me of Maria Antoinette. It\u2019s a little bit like, \u2018Let them eat cake.\u2019 \u2026 It rubbed me the wrong way when he said that. It just seemed like a disconnect with the average American person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not the average American person. For one thing, he\u2019s got money. The average American person does not have money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trivializing what is actually happening. We\u2019re not concerned about an extra toy for our children. The children are not upset about that. We\u2019re concerned about having food and being able to afford groceries or getting enough hours at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Cutting Government Spending<\/h3>\n<p>Now that Elon Musk is no longer working so closely with Trump, the voters were asked about government spending. What percentage of total projected government spending do they believe will actually end up being cut?<\/p>\n<p>The highest answer anyone gave was 30%. One voter said between 20-25%, while another guessed 20%. Four people estimated the total would be 15 percent. At least five people said the total would only be 1-2%.<\/p>\n<h3>Voters Respond to a Parody of the President<\/h3>\n<p>During the focus groups, voters were shown a clip from an episode of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OjTNQNr7LA8\"> Saturday Night Live<\/a> that aired in May. In the clip, James Austin Johnson, portraying President Trump, randomly interrupts a tribute to Mother\u2019s Day. The actor, as Trump, says, \u201cHello, it\u2019s me again. Invading all aspects of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin voters were asked if they feel like Trump actually invades all aspects of their lives. Only two of the 12 said yes. One said they hear from Trump way too often. Of the 12 swing voters, only three regularly watch Saturday Night Live.<\/p>\n<p>As Trump\u2019s second term continues, the Swing Voter Project will keep talking to voters about how they feel about his policies and behavior.
