On October 28, we caught up with 11 of the same former Haley voters to see what, if anything, had changed about their opinions of the candidates in the 2024 presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>In this year&#8217;s election, voters from certain crucial demographic groups will play a key role in choosing the country&#8217;s next president. Each month, The Deciders series checks in with one of those groups to determine their thoughts about the candidates. The initiative is a partnership between Sago, Engagious, NBC News and Syracuse University&#8217;s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EMBZRjMKMOg&#038;feature=youtu.be[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Opinions on Trump\u2019s Rally at Madison Square Garden<\/h3>\n<p>The day before The Deciders focus groups took place, a Trump rally was held at Madison Square Garden in New York. During this event, some of the speakers made derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico, immigrants, Kamala Harris and Hilary Clinton. Seven of the 11 focus group participants had heard about the event and what was said there.<\/p>\n<p>During our focus groups, we played snippets of some of the most offensive things said at the rally. Comments from the Haley voters included:<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n\u201cThat is so typical of what I hear from them all the time, and why, as a Republican, I have become so upset, because this is not the Republican party that I know.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt just seems like Donald Trump and the Republican Party now is the party of grievances and they demean the people that disagree with them.\u201d <\/em><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want none of them people running nothing around me with that type of attitude.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt sucks. It\u2019s a terrible reflection on the party. I\u2019m not going to vote for Harris because of it. It still makes me torn. Like if they had done a very professional event, maybe that would have moved the needle a little towards him \u2026 It keeps me in a place where it makes it hard to fill in that oval.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think it\u2019s disgusting. I can\u2019t say that it would change my vote. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any place for that in a political rally. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a place for that anywhere.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think it\u2019s just more of what I expect from the campaign. They like to rile up their base and that\u2019s how they excite people to vote.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI just say it\u2019s repulsive.\u201d <\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; el_class=&#8220;greenpostquote&#8220;]&#8220;I think it\u2019s just more of what I expect from the campaign. They like to rile up their base and that\u2019s how they excite people to vote.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">Which Candidates Do the Haley Voters Support Now?<\/h3>\n<p>The 11 former Haley voters didn&#8217;t agree on how they intend to vote. Some plan to vote for Harris and others plan to vote for Trump. Some expected to cast their votes for a third-party candidate. And even though our conversations took place the week before the election, some still hadn\u2019t decided.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">What Harris Supporters Had to Say<\/h3>\n<p>Three of the 11 former Haley voters support Kamala Harris. Here\u2019s what one of them said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe\u2019s a lot better candidate than the Republican one. I am a Republican, conservative Republican, but, then again, look who we have to vote for as a republican. You can\u2019t go there. So, I had to switch and vote for her. No questions asked.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When this voter was asked if there was anything Trump could say or do to change their mind, they said, \u201cNo. No. He should be in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other comments about Trump from Harris supporters included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen he came out during the debate and said \u2018I have a concept of a plan,\u2019 that spoke volumes to me. He does not have any idea about what exactly he wants to do, unless it makes it good for him, not the country.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m more afraid of what\u2019s going to happen if he gets in power again, so now I don\u2019t want him in power.\u201d <\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">The Opinions of Third-Party Voters<\/h3>\n<p>Two of the participants in the Oct. 28 focus groups planned to vote for Chase Oliver, the Libertarian candidate. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think Oliver is going to win. It\u2019s like a protest, about saying \u2018hey, please give me different options.\u2019 I\u2019ve voted Libertarian before \u2026 Maybe if I was in a more of a swing state, perhaps I\u2019d have a harder time not voting for one of the two major parties.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI will more than likely vote Libertarian Chase Oliver because Trump is a known quantity and Harris hasn\u2019t been able to explain how or why things would be different than they have been the past four years. I don\u2019t think she\u2019s been able to tell people how she would make things better, why things would be different.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When one of these voters was asked if there was anything Trump could say to gain their support, their response was:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019d say I won\u2019t vote for you. You can\u2019t unring that bell. The things that have occurred have occurred. You can\u2019t go back and change history and you\u2019re not going to change. I mean, that much is crystal clear. You are who you are.\u201d <\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgbox&#8220; conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_column conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_row_inner equal_height=&#8220;yes&#8220; content_placement=&#8220;middle&#8220; el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboxinner&#8220;][vc_column_inner el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboximg&#8220;][vc_single_image image=&#8220;9004111222026808&#8243; img_size=&#8220;full&#8220; alignment=&#8220;center&#8220; style=&#8220;vc_box_rounded&#8220; css=&#8220;&#8220; label=&#8220;&#8220;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">The Perspective of Undecided Voters<\/h3>\n<p>Two of the former Haley voters had not made up their mind about who to vote for on election day. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m going to vote in the general election, for sure. For president, I was either going to write in a name or vote for Trump, I think. And those are still my choices \u2026I don\u2019t think he represents the presidency well. However, was the world a more stable place when he was in power versus Harris? And I think the answer is yes. Was my own family economically better off when he was in office versus now? Yes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think right now I\u2019m still leaning towards Trump. I don\u2019t think I\u2019m hard locked for voting for him. I think that if I go in next Tuesday and go cast my ballot and something\u2019s just stopping me from voting for him, then maybe I\u2019ll vote for her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">What Trump Supporters Had to Say<\/h3>\n<p>Several of the focus group participants plan to vote for Trump, but they had qualms about their choice. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m actually going to vote for Vance, meaning that it will be a Trump vote because I like [his] VP better. Because there\u2019s still a chance Trump\u2019s going to go to jail. That\u2019s not off the table, with all the lawsuits and stuff against him. And, so, then we have to look at who\u2019s going to be the leader, if that happens.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would still say that I\u2019m a true Republican and I\u2019m going to vote Republican \u2026 Yeah, I would have preferred a different Republican candidate. That\u2019s clear.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s still kind of crazy, but maybe a good kind of crazy. And I think the Russians, they\u2019re afraid of him. That\u2019s pretty important to me, that our enemies are afraid of us.
