The conversation centered on the topic of whether Joe Biden should resign from the 2024 presidential race. The July focus groups were conducted before the attempted assassination of former President Trump and the announcement of President Biden&#8217;s withdrawal from the 2024 race.<\/p>\n<p>An ongoing collaboration between Sago and Engagious, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/en\/swing-voters-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swing Voter Project<\/a> interviews residents of key battleground states each month. The voters share how they feel about the presidential candidates and current events. Participants voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Context for Florida Swing Voters<\/h3>\n<p>As Florida\u2019s population continues to increase, the state received one more electoral vote after the 2020 Census, bringing its total to 30. Only two states have more electoral votes than Florida: California has 54 electoral votes, and Texas has 40. While Trump won Florida\u2019s electoral votes in 2016 and 2020, the state\u2019s electoral votes went to Barack Obama in 2012 and 2008.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgbox&#8220; conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_column conditional_render=&#8220;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8220;][vc_row_inner equal_height=&#8220;yes&#8220; content_placement=&#8220;middle&#8220; el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboxinner&#8220;][vc_column_inner el_class=&#8220;mainpostimgboximg&#8220;][vc_single_image image=&#8220;9004111222025254&#8243; img_size=&#8220;full&#8220; alignment=&#8220;center&#8220; style=&#8220;vc_box_rounded&#8220; css=&#8220;&#8220;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">Opinions on Biden as a Presidential Candidate<\/h3>\n<p>Though the focus groups with the Florida swing voters occurred before Biden stepped down as a presidential candidate, they still had strong opinions about whether he was fit to run for office. Eight of the 13 participants said Biden should withdraw from the race.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the people who felt this way are Democrats, three are Republicans and five are independents. Here\u2019s what they had to say:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBecause I think he should just accept that he\u2019s not the person that he was 20 years ago and that he is experiencing illness and it\u2019s of no fault of his own \u2026 He should just be honest in the fact that he is not the best person to serve and that he wants the best for United States and step aside.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s left us very vulnerable in the eyes of other countries and I just think he just needs to voluntarily step down. He can watch himself and see that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy personal opinion is that there are enough people who don\u2019t want to vote for Trump, but when they see Biden\u2019s condition, they feel like they can\u2019t vote for him and, so, they\u2019re going to vote for Trump.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe just looks really, really frail. I didn\u2019t watch the debate, but I saw a reel of his wife helping him down after the debate and Trump just walked off on his own, so that\u2019s kind of discouraging, that the man can barely walk by himself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think it would be smart to try to yield to someone younger, maybe with more energy and maybe a greater capacity to lead our country for the next four years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">Voters Who Didn\u2019t Think Biden Should Step Down<\/h3>\n<p>Five of the 13 Florida voters thought that Biden should continue to represent the Democratic Party in the election. Their comments included the following:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a little late in the game or a new candidate to come in for the Democratic people to concentrate [on] and learn about. I don\u2019t know, I feel like that might hurt the Democratic party more than help it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m not against someone taking Biden\u2019s place, but I am against Trump winning, so I don\u2019t feel like there\u2019d be enough time to get a new candidate in that would stand a chance at beating Trump.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One participant said they would like to know who would replace Biden before they would be in favor of his withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI have to see who they\u2019re considering. First, I want someone young, I definitely want someone younger, but who is that? I would want to know who that person is before I say someone else should be there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">Which Candidates Would Get Their Votes<\/h3>\n<p>On July 10 the Florida swing voters were asked who they would support in a multi-candidate race. The sample ballot included Robert Kennedy Jr. and Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how they would vote:<\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden: 6<br \/>\nDonald Trump: 2<br \/>\nRobert Kennedy Jr.: 1<br \/>\nJill Stein: 1<br \/>\nCornel West: 0<br \/>\nChase Oliver: 3<\/p>\n<p>The Florida voters were then asked who they would vote for if Kamala Harris was the Democratic candidate instead of Biden. In that case, their votes would be divided as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Kamala Harris: 9<br \/>\nDonald Trump: 2<br \/>\nRobert Kennedy Jr.: 0<br \/>\nJill Stein: 1<br \/>\nCornel West: 0<br \/>\nChase Oliver: 1<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">Why Voters Would Choose Kamala Harris<\/h3>\n<p>The participants were asked why they would support Kamala Harris and not Biden. Here\u2019s what they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat\u2019s an easy one. That\u2019s an opportunity to be on the side of history right there, first African-American female to actually win the presidency.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe\u2019s already doing the job, so she\u2019s just basically, in my eyes, getting a promotion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI went with Harris this time over Oliver, because I feel like voting for Oliver would be a wasted vote. I could vote for a Libertarian, but I don\u2019t think that it would make a difference and I wouldn\u2019t want to waste a vote against Trump.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220; el_class=&#8220;greenpostquote&#8220;]&#8220;That\u2019s an easy one. That\u2019s an opportunity to be on the side of history right there, first African-American female to actually win the presidency.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8220;&#8220;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">Is Kamala Harris Ready to Be President?<\/h3>\n<p>Several of the respondents didn\u2019t think Harris is prepared to be president, but still said they would vote for her. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she would have good people around her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just haven\u2019t seen her around as much in the four years of being vice president, but, I mean, it can\u2019t be worse than the other option.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor7\">Should Biden Finish His Term?<\/h3>\n<p>Eight of the participants in the focus groups think the White House could be hiding something about Biden\u2019s true medical condition. However, they reject Speaker Mike Johnson\u2019s proposal to remove Biden from office before his term ends. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAllow him to finish the term. I don\u2019t feel that he\u2019s in that dire straits, that he can\u2019t make it until the election.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s not incapacitated, he\u2019s just old and getting slow. He\u2019s not in a coma, so I think that\u2019s a little extreme.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAlso, I think that\u2019s a bad precedent.
