This initiative gives swing voters\u2014those who voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and then for Joe Biden in 2020\u2014the opportunity to share their viewpoints through monthly online focus groups.<\/p>\n<p>Each respondent group is comprised of swing voters from 10 battleground states. In October, the spotlight was on Pennsylvania and the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<h3>Understanding the Pennsylvania Swing Voter Group<\/h3>\n<p>Among our 13 respondents for October\u2018s virtual session, six were registered Republicans, six were registered Democrats, and one was Independent. We kept our discussion focused on elections and candidate preferences, rather than delving into specific issues. Because control of the Senate was in the hands of voters in just four states\u2014Pennsylvania being one of them\u2014we were especially keen to collect our group\u2019s opinions on the state\u2019s two Senate candidates: Democratic nominee John Fetterman and Republican nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz.<\/p>\n<h3>Fetterman vs Oz: Who do you plan to vote for in the Pennsylvania Senate race?<\/h3>\n<p><img  title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47512 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Pennsylvania-Swing-Voter-2022-300x200.jpg\"  alt=\"sago\"  width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Surgeon and TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman were up for the Pennsylvania Senate seat this November, and the polls indicated a tight race.<\/p>\n<p>Nine of the respondents said they planned to vote for Fetterman, two said they\u2019d cast votes for Oz, and two remained undecided. They expressed that Fetterman\u2019s stroke was not a major voting concern, nor were Oz\u2019s attacks on Fetterman\u2019s criminal justice record.<\/p>\n<p>So what factors were driving the Pennsylvania Senate race? It wasn\u2019t just Roe v. Wade, inflation, or Biden vs. Trump. Six of the seven respondents in one group session confirmed their concern over which party controls the U.S. Senate would be a driving factor when their votes were cast. They elaborated with the following remarks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to see the Republicans in charge of the Senate, and I don\u2019t want to see them in charge of the House, either. I\u2019d like to see something other than the charge to kill democracy, the charge to spring forward with economic plans that support the upper 2%, if not the upper 1%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s too much at stake; there\u2019s too many potential human rights issues, climate change among them. I think that we can see a stronger economy in the next decade if we move away from oil quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just feel like the Republican candidates\u2026[there\u2019s] just too much drama, and I\u2019m just over it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In an always-illuminating exercise, Rich Thau, President of Engagious and our moderator for these swing voter sessions, asked respondents to list some words they associated with Fetterman:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fraud<\/li>\n<li>Cannabis<\/li>\n<li>Raise taxes<\/li>\n<li>Tax evasion<\/li>\n<li>Intimidating<\/li>\n<li>Unpolished<\/li>\n<li>Tough guy<\/li>\n<li>Plain-spoken<\/li>\n<li>Qualified<\/li>\n<li>Tall<\/li>\n<li>Health issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And here are some of the words and phrases they associated with Dr. Oz:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New Jersey<\/li>\n<li>Doctor<\/li>\n<li>Reality TV<\/li>\n<li>Unqualified<\/li>\n<li>Kind of a joke<\/li>\n<li>Tragic<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss conman<\/li>\n<li>Carpetbagger<\/li>\n<li>Oprah<\/li>\n<li>Pharmaceuticals<\/li>\n<li>Celebrity<\/li>\n<li>Scam and lies<\/li>\n<li>Entertainer<\/li>\n<li>Money<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Shapiro vs Mastriano: Who will you vote for in the Pennsylvania Governor\u2019s race?<\/h3>\n<p>As former Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf reached his term limit, Pennsylvania voters had to decide on Nov. 8 who would take over his seat: Democratic candidate Josh Shapiro or Republican Doug Mastriano.<\/p>\n<p>Eight out of our 13 respondents said they\u2019d roll with Shapiro, while only one would vote for Mastriano. The other four were undecided as of October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are the words and phrases they used to describe Shapiro:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Able<\/li>\n<li>Standing up for victims<\/li>\n<li>A fighter<\/li>\n<li>Qualified<\/li>\n<li>Proven<\/li>\n<li>Progressive<\/li>\n<li>Long-standing<\/li>\n<li>Tom Wolf 2.0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And here\u2019s what comes to mind when they think of Mastriano:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Angry<\/li>\n<li>Radical<\/li>\n<li>Lunatic<\/li>\n<li>Very scary<\/li>\n<li>Outdated point of view<\/li>\n<li>Trump<\/li>\n<li>Militant<\/li>\n<li>MAGA-fascist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Our respondents expounded a bit upon their thoughts of Mastriano:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny politician that does commercials [wearing] army fatigues, I pretty much dismiss them. I don\u2019t care what you did in the Middle East\u2026trying to be some tough guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a Republican and I think he\u2019s an extremist.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the stark differences between what our respondents had to say about Shapiro and Mastriano, we wanted to understand how four of these voters could remain undecided.<\/p>\n<p>One respondent clarified his indecision actually revolved around whether to vote for either candidate at all.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf it were tight, I\u2019d [vote] for Shapiro, for sure. If it\u2019s not tight, I don\u2019t know. I might just&#8230;write some third-party candidate in.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thau pressed on with the question, \u201cIf it\u2019s not close, why not still vote for Shapiro?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a protest vote,\u201d said the respondent. \u201cI don\u2019t want to necessarily pull a lever for&#8230;a candidate if I don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>More of the Same Sentiments Regarding Biden and Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Every month we ask our respondents to share their opinions on former President Trump and the incumbent Biden. And every month we are met with virtually the same responses.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how our group feels whenever they see Biden on the screen:<br \/>\n<img  title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47508 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct.jpg\"  alt=\"sago\"  width=\"997\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct.jpg 997w, https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct-640x322.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct-400x201.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Swing_Voters_Oct-367x184.jpg 367w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 997px) 100vw, 997px\" \/><br \/>\nDespite these pejoratives, none of the respondents said they would take Trump back over Biden in a hypothetical election. So there you have it.<\/p>\n<p>Thau ended with an apt closing quip: \u201cWhenever I hear answers like this, which is basically every month, it reminds me of a fifth-place team playing a sixth-place
