The sun is shining; it’s a beautiful Tuesday morning. The birds are chirping, bees are buzzing, and the sun is shining on everything. People are beginning to rise and begin their day, they turn on their televisions and every channel is airing the same breaking news. In a late night session the leaders of the country voted and passed a law banning all guns from civilians. All legal gun owners are to report immediately with their guns to collections centers. The breaking news story is interrupted by the sounds of tanks and large trucks. As people look through their windows the see soldiers marching through the streets following the tanks and armored vehicles. Local news media continues to report that gun owners must report to local collection centers by 5:00PM today or government officials will begin door to door searches of registered gun owners or suspected gun owners and arrest those not conforming to the new laws. A spokesperson for the government comes on the television with these words, “Any citizen that does not willing report to local gun collection centers by 5:00PM today will be listed as a terrorist and enemy combatant of our country. You will be hunted down, arrested, and placed in detainment camps. All citizens are expected to turn over to the government all guns and ammunition, a good citizen is one that follows the laws of the land”. The day goes on and by the thousands, citizens’ report to collections centers. At 5:05PM the door to door searches begin however not like the man on the television said. Government officials begin banging through doors, all doors of every house not just those of registered or suspected gun owners. The government officials are not men in suits but armed soldiers, throwing people out of their homes, tearing the homes apart looking for guns and ammunition. Citizens of every race and age forced out into the streets, placed in handcuffs, and treated like the common criminal. Why are they being treated this way? Because they may be lying to the government and nobody lies to the government. Until it is proven that they have no guns or ammunition they are believed to be a threat, therefore they are the common criminal. Anyone that is believed to be a threat to the government or its new law will also be hunted down and arrested. The government begins compiling list of names of those that are considered missing and a high threat. Military personnel along with government law enforcement begin looking for these individuals. The government realizes that the citizens of urban areas are conforming well to the new law. The problem lies with the citizens in the suburban and rural areas of the country. It will take longer than expected to collect the guns, ammunition, and threats to the government in some of these areas but in time the government will prevail.
Within days of the new law passing the number of violent crimes begins to increase. Criminals realize that while the government and police are busy collecting up guns and so called threats, there is no one to stop them. Stores are robbed and looted, women are raped, and people are being mugged, and homes robbed. As the victims of these crimes file their reports they all tell the same story, “they had a gun and threatened me with it”. Government officials are confused and questioning why these criminals have guns. “Why didn’t the criminals turn in their guns? Why are these people not on any of our registration list as being gun owners?” With crime rates rising faster than ever before police and government officials realize they can’t chase down all the criminals with the resources they have. Their solution to this problem is the institution of marshal law and a curfew for all citizens. They tell the people, “This is to protect you.” Permits will be issued to those that must be out after dark, anyone without a permit will be arrested for breaking curfew, and they will be considered a threat and placed in a detention camp where they will await trial. Do to the increased amount of violent crimes and the number of people that are failing to adhere to the new gun laws the government suspends habeas corpus. Thinking of this reminds me of parts of the Stanley Kubrick film, “A Clockwork Orange”, gangs of hoodlums running the streets doing as they wish. Welcome to the new United States of America!
Could this happen in America? Well, maybe not like how I put it but it very well could. Our politicians cut a lot of back door deals in late night secessions of Congress. I think it is safe to say that if anything like this came across the desk of President Obama he would sign it without hesitation. Too many politicians and anti-gun organizations sit back and wait, hoping that there is a mass shooting so they can push their agenda on the American people. The liberal media sits back waiting also, they are the helping hand to these politicians and anti-gun groups. The media is so worried about painting a picture of the shooter that they don’t even care if they have the facts right. In the latest school shooting in Newtown, CT. all of the major news outlets where quick to claim that 24 year old Ryan Lanza was the shooter. The poor guy had his life turned upside down by the news media. He was being painted as a murderer before he even knew what had occurred. This innocent person was found guilty of committing mass murder by the news media while he was in New Jersey. I don’t even know if the media even apologized to Ryan for their mistake? Not only does this poor man have to bury his mother and brother, but thanks to the media people will always remember his name when people talk about the sad event that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We have no need for courts when the media is doing the job for them.
Many liberals believe that no guns in America would make it a safer place. No guns mean no crime right? Wrong! You couldn’t be more wrong in fact. Thanks to Kyle Becker and his “9 Must-See Gun Control Statistics” we can take a look at how well gun control works. As of 2011, the United States was ranked 24th in the world for murder rate. With gun control I say we can easily knock Columbia out of the number one seat within a year. The 2011 numbers showed America’s murder rate at 0.042802 per 1,000 people. From 1973 to 2009 total violent crime has decreased, yes gone down by 65%. The murder rate in the United States has also gone down; it decreased by 8.1% between 2008 and 2009 and has continued to fall since 2006. It has been also proven that states that allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns had a 60% decrease in multiple victim public shootings and a 78% decrease in victims per attack. As of 2007, the United States rated highest with number of guns per capita with 88.8 guns per 100 residents and as we know, the number of gun sales has steadily increased. The murder rate in the United States in for 2003 was 5.7 per 100,000 people. Now compare those numbers to countries in Europe where guns are banned. In Belarus in the late 1990’s the murder rate was 10.4 per 100,000. In Luxembourg in 2002 the murder rate was 9.01 per 100,000. In Russia during the year 2002 the murder rate was 20.54 per 100,000. I don’t think I need to explain these numbers to you. What needs to happen is maybe the liberals that want to ban guns need to go live in these European countries for a year or two to get the full effect of what the Second Amendment truly means.
When an armed citizen in America prevents a crime from occurring the large media sources in our country ignore it. On Tuesday December 11, 2012 a man armed with a rifle entered the Clackamas Town Center Mall in Oregon. The shooter, Jacob Tyler Roberts fired 3 shots before the gun jammed. At that time civilian Nick Meli, who is legally licensed to carry a concealed weapon, pulled his gun from the holster and confronted the shooter. Once the shooter cleared the jam in his gun his final shot was the one that ended his own life. In this shooting just days before the Newton, CT shooting, Steven Mathew Forsyth and Cindy Ann Yuill were murdered in cold blood. A 15-year-old girl was also seriously wounded but expected to survive. The shooter realized that he was in trouble once he seen the armed citizen, he knew his rampage was over, so he ended it himself before Mr. Meli could end it for him. There was very little talk about this incident with the large news sources. Why? The reason is because cases like this support armed civilians and the Second Amendment. Many sources show that one in ten mass shooting are stopped by armed civilians and many of these shooting occur where guns are banned. In fact, all but one of the “successful” mass shootings that have occurred between 1980 and 2010 occurred in areas where armed citizens are banned. The average number of people killed in a mass shooting that is stopped by an armed citizen is 2.3 deaths compared to the 14.3 deaths when the shooter is stopped by a 911 response. Again, it all falls back to what I have said before. If a criminal walks into a store and sees unarmed people the criminal sees easy targets. He knows he has a good chance of committing the crime and getting out alive. However, if the same criminal see armed civilians he realizes there is a good chance he may pay for the crime with his life and moves on to find an easier target.
The problem with these mass shootings isn’t the guns involved. That’s like saying cars are responsible for the number of people killed by drunk drivers. The issue comes down to mental health. A majority of the shooters in these mass shootings all suffered from mental health issues. In my employment I have seen firsthand the number of individuals that require help and they don’t get the help they need or are limited on the treatment they get due to governments cutting resources. As more and more states close mental health hospitals these individuals are moved back into communities. Private agencies do their best to treat these people but you can’t force them. If a person doesn’t want to take their medication they are not going to. Many of the mentally ill individuals may go through life never touching a gun or hurting another person. However, it only takes a few to kill many. That fact has been proven time and time again. As inhuman as it may sound there are people in this world that should spend their lives in mental health hospitals where they can get the treatment they need. I know, this may sound inhuman but the days of shock therapy and lobotomies are over. I am not saying that every person with a mental illness is a threat. Doctors treating patients and family members of people with mental illness know many of their behaviors. Doctors have a clue of which patients may pose a threat to others. Society looks down on people with mental illness. Because of this, those that don’t get the treatment they need don’t. Some of those that do get treatment may not get the proper treatment due to government or health insurance. There needs to be a better support system for those with mental illness, America needs to stop looking at those with mental health issues like they are some kind of monster. They are not monsters, they are people like you and I that are sick. To fix the problem we must look at the source, not the guns but illnesses that affect those committing the crimes.
Remember, if guns are responsible for killing people then there are a lot of other items that need banned. Spoons, for making people fat; Cars, to prevent drunk drivers; alcohol to prevent drunken sex that leads to pregnancy or regrets. There are many things this country has outlawed and that is working out well for us. Illegal immigrants, thank goodness we don’t have a problem with illegals in our country. Illegal drugs such as heroine or meth, could you imagine if this country had a drug problem? This paragraph to this point has made no sense has it? That’s the point I am getting at, banning guns in America makes no sense. Many of us see and understand that. We understand that by banning guns is not going to be the answer to end mass shootings. We understand that banning guns will not be the answer to stopping violent crime. The 1764 schoolhouse killings that took place near Greencastle, PA was done with dynamite, the 1995 attack on the FBI Building in Oklahoma City was done with fertilizer and claimed 168 lives. Banning guns won’t create less crime, it will create more victims.
Only you can prevent the loss of America. Call your Congress men/women, tell them you support the Second Amendment and they are in Washington D.C. to be your voice. If we make it to the next election, look at where the candidates stand on the Second Amendment. America’s defense against those wishing to take our freedoms is us, the American people. That power is granted to us by the Constitution of the United States.
