Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying very hard to help his man, Barack Obama. Of course, when push comes to shove, Reid should not expect anything except to end up taking the fall for his latest mischief of misdirection. But, it does need to be placed in perspective, at least a little.
The mainstream media has been trying for months to portray Mitt Romney as a foreign policy lightweight. They were literally salivating over the possibilities during Romney’s recent little tour overseas. Perhaps they thought they’d struck it rich when he pointed out that there were problems with the London Olympics, and suggested that Great Britain wasn’t ready for the games. Well, first one must understand that the British press had been pointing that out themselves just the day before Romney’s comments, and the various issues that have come up since with empty seats in sold out events, and military having to step up to provide security have proved that statement absolutely correct. The UK press complained about Romney saying the same things they did, and theoretically this bruised some egos. But, while Great Britain is an ally of the U.S., one mustn’t forget that they have been shifting far left for years. It would have been really odd if they actually liked Romney, and is it really necessary to get upset about hurting the feelings of leaders in a nation where even tweeting can be a criminal offense. I am not suggesting that real threats should be considered protected speech, however when one considers that this is in a nation where sports fans are known to literally beat the crap out of each other over a soccer match, this does seem rather silly.
Then it was on to Israel, and again, the media made a valiant attempt at making hay over a misconstrued comment about the Palestinian Authority. Well, the truth hurts, and the fact is that the Palestinian economic opportunities will be hampered for as long as they are determined to deny that Israel has any right to exist in the first place. And for those that obviously failed their Civics classes, Israel is the only democratic U.S. ally in the Middle East, and Romney would really be an idiot if he treated them poorly. But please don’t anyone tell the Obama administration that. It’s not like they would listen anyway!
Finally, there was the trip to Poland, where Romney was well-received by Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa. Remember the good old days, when the USSR was the clear and obvious enemy? When Socialism was a bad thing, and was eventually proven to be a complete and utter failure? Well, in case you’re completely daft, Walesa fought against the Soviets, and more recently, was snubbed by Obama for being “too political” (read: on the wrong side when it comes to Socialism.) No wonder that old freedom fighter likes Romney so much. But, the media did have to add grist to the mill, and make asses of themselves – or cause a Romney staffer to tell them to kiss his ass. They were upset because Romney was refusing to play the “sound-byte” game on this trip, and didn’t answer many of their questions. I don’t blame him. And I don’t blame that staffer for losing his temper with the petulant childr… I mean reporters. Sorry press corps, but there’s a time and place, and bluntly, a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in any nation is not the time or place for fielding your precious questions. Show some respect!
So, all in all, Romney ended up pissing off all the right people – the press corps, the Palestinians, and the folks in nearly Socialist Great Britain. And he was a smashing success with all the right people – the people of Poland (one of the only nations in Europe that hasn’t been pulled down severely by the economic downturn), Lech Walesa, and the Israelis. But, don’t expect to see the mainstream media dare to whisper that! Should call them the “Obamastream Media”.
So, since the Democrats couldn’t honestly get anything really bad out of Romney’s overseas trip, what do they do? Their fall-back position is to set Harry Reid up to be thrown under the bus eventually, and con him into saying on the Senate floor that Romney hasn’t paid taxes in over a decade. Now, back to that whole history thing, lest we forget, this isn’t Romney’s first run for the presidency. He did put his hat in for the 2008 campaign. Now, that would leave at least six years of not paying taxes that he would theoretically need to cover up back then. I’ve often said that sane people do not run for public office on any level. It takes a special type of person to run for the presidency. And anyone that assumes that they will be able to hide their past in that process is insane – or Barack Obama. Romney is many things, but he is not a stupid man. OF COURSE HE PAID HIS TAXES! The economy is in hell, and there are people out there that actually believe that a tax-evading billionaire would be stupid enough to run for office? I mean, seriously, if anyone in Washington really had hard proof that Romney was failing to pay taxes, don’t you think they would have sent the IRS after him by now? Now, if he’s been aggressively avoiding paying higher rates of taxes by taking advantage of tax shelters provided in the current tax code, I say “go for it!” My mother always told me, “the rich are rich because they don’t waste a dime.” Federal taxes are the biggest waste of money, period. So, now we just have to wait and see what the Dems circus comes up with next – and maybe figure out if Reid is the guy that gets shot out of the cannon, or just a clown.
