A friendly note to Carbonite: I’m looking for alternatives to your service

I’ve been using your service for two years now. Generally, I’ve tolerated the CarboniteUI.exe program constantly locking up so I have to physically kill the process using Task Manager, then restart it just so I can make sure the service is paused so I can watch a movie on Netflix.

Well, I’m due to auto-renew in June, and if you check, you’ll see that has just been canceled. The only reason I haven’t outright terminated the service is I don’t see any way to do so.

Why? I read your reasons for kowtowing to the leftists who  took offense to Rush Limbaugh’s remarks on air, remarks he apologized for, and with any liberal commentator I believe that would be it.

But for the left, who makes it a habit to attack the sponsors of any conservative pundit they disagree with, no apology is ever enough.

Carbonite exec David Friend issued this statement, and the statement issued via Twitter below;

You are a private business and can spend your advertising dollars any way you see fit, with any personality that fits your business image.

I am a consumer and customer, and am likewise free to spend my money (so far, Obamacare notwithstanding) anyplace I see fit; to pay for services provided by businesses that fit my needs. I’m not much on boycotts, but with your caving in to demands made mostly by people who likely don’t even use your service, well that just doesn’t sit right with me. They feign outrage over any slight, any discomfort; and any inconvenience is intolerable. You caving to that only fuels thier attacks against others, and I won’t pay for that.

There are other services such as Mozy Online Backup, as well as others who are banging on my Twitter door wanting to be let in. Others including Dropbox and Zoolz are actually free up to a point; it’s not like we don’t have choices.

The whole brouhaha in a nutshell, Rush was right to apologize, however;

… let’s keep in mind that it was Fluke who made her sexual activity a matter of national political debate by insisting that the government pass laws and regulations forcing employers and insurers to provide her free contraception, and apparently as much as she and others demand.  It’s Republicans who believe that contraception should remain a private affair, and that employers and insurers should be free to decide whether to cover contraception for their employees and customers or not.  Democrats used Fluke to demand that those choices be stripped from private enterprises and instead be forced by the executive branch to entirely subsidize contraception.

Sandra Fluke claims to speak for women, but as this student at Georgetown explains, not all women agree;

I’m a proud Georgetown woman upset about another Georgetown woman who may have no pride at all.  How else do you explain  - Ms. Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown Law student, now famous for testimony she never gave – jumping up to talk about her sex life (with the House Minority Leader and with the liberal media) and ask for the cost of her sex life to be subsidized by other students at a Jesuit School?

No, she doesn’t speak for all women at Georgetown, and further, she may actually have been planted there;

For me the interesting part of the story is the ever-evolving “coed”. I put that in quotes because in the beginning she was described as a Georgetown law student. It was then revealed that prior to attending Georgetown she was an active women’s right advocate. In one of her first interviews she is quoted as talking about how she reviewed Georgetown’s insurance policy prior to committing to attend, and seeing that it didn’t cover contraceptive services,  she decided to attend with the express purpose of battling this policy. During this time, she was described as a 23-year-old coed. Magically, at the same time Congress is debating the forced coverage of contraception, she appears and is even brought to Capitol Hill to testify. This morning, in an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show, it was revealed that she is 30 years old,  NOT the 23 that had been reported all along.

In other words, folks, you are being played. She has been an activist all along and the Dems were just waiting for the appropriate time to play her.

While she is described as a “third year law student” they always fail to mention that she is also the past president of Law Students for Reproductive Justice.

You were played, Mr. Friend, as were her willing accomplices in the media, and anyone else who believed she was some poor outraged girl with a yearly $3,000 bill for contraceptives.

Well, maybe you can contact Sandra Fluke and have her replace me as one of your customers. Maybe Nancy Pelosi.

I quit.

    My personal letter to david.friend@carbonite.com

    I saw the story of how you have canceled advertising with Rush Limbaugh even though you continue to advertise with Ed Schultz.
    Both have used the exact same word to describe women. While I could agree with you if there was a reason to believe your decision was taken as a principled stand against a crude public discourse. It is instead obvious that you have only contributed to the problem by adopting a political standard of your own.

    While I don’t believe the word slut belongs on the public airways I am also firmly of the belief that hypocrisy has no place in the public discourse either.

    I found your address on http://silvexis.com/2009/06/25/closure-on-carbonite/ where you assure you will properly resolve issues. I would like a refund on the balance my account. I do not wish to support your company. This is not a left or right issue for me. I do not use a political criteria when making purchases from businesses offering what I consider to be useful products or services. I do not wish to support hypocrisy.

    My account uses the email address ??????? @sago.com

    Thank you for your prompt response,
